Build Confidence! Should you use the opinions of others to get a confidence boost?

- January 20, 2021August 20, 2021 - Chris

While you don’t want to completely rely on others’ opinions to boost your ego, validation can also be very effective in order to build confidence. Asking someone who cares about your development as well as the quality of your growth or performance to tell you what he/she thinks. Be sure to pick people whose feedback will be entirely truthful. When performance appraisals are only positive, we subconsciously stop having confidence in them.

Also, remember that some people need more support than others, so don’t be shy about asking for it.

Confidence is not something that can be taught as a set of commands. Confidence is a state of mind. Positive thinking, learning, teaching, knowing, and talking with other people are effective ways to help improve or build confidence. Confidence comes from a sense of well-being, acceptance of your body and mind (your self-concept), and faith in your abilities, skills, and experience. Confidence is an attribute that most people would like to have.

What is self-confidence?

While self-confidence can mean different things for different people, it just means having positive thoughts and beliefs about yourself and abilities.

Confidence is, in part, the result of how we were educated and how we were taught. We learn from others how to think about ourselves and how to behave. These lessons affect what we believe about ourselves and others. Confidence is also the result of our experiences and how we have learned to react to different situations.

Self-confidence is not a static measure. Our confidence to perform roles and tasks and deal with situations can increase and decrease, and some days we may feel more secure than others. When we build confidence, we grow in our belief that we can do great job in any task.

Lack of confidence can be the result of many factors, including fear of the unknown, criticism, dissatisfaction with personal appearance (self-esteem), feeling unprepared, poor time management, lack of knowledge and previous failures. Often when we lack self-confidence it is because we think others will think of us. Others may make fun of us or complain or make fun of us if we make a mistake. Thinking like this can prevent us from doing the things we want or need to do because we think the consequences are too painful or embarrassing.

Overconfidence can be a problem if it makes you think you can do it all, even if you don’t have the skills, abilities, and knowledge to do it right. In such situations, overconfidence can lead to failure. Being overconfident also means that you are more likely to meet other arrogant or selfish people. People are much more likely to appreciate their failure if they perceive it as arrogant.

Learning and research can help us gain more confidence in our ability to manage situations, roles, and tasks.

Knowing what to expect and how and why things are done will raise your awareness and generally make you feel more prepared and ultimately more secure.

However, learning and gaining knowledge can sometimes make us feel less confident in our abilities to perform roles and tasks, and when this happens, we need to combine our knowledge with experience. By doing something we have learned a lot, we put into practice the theory that builds confidence and increases learning and understanding.

Prospective new parents may feel nervous and less sure about having a baby. They are likely to buy books or visit websites that can offer advice and clear up some of the mysteries. They are also likely to talk to other parents to gain knowledge and understanding.

The Impact of Positive Thinking
Build confidence and you will be unstoppable

In the workplace, training can be provided for staff to learn to manage or use new systems and procedures. This is especially important during a period of organizational change, as many people will naturally resist change. However, if people affected by the changes receive adequate information and training, these resistances can generally be minimized because staff feel more prepared and therefore more secure with the new system.

A worthy role model can help you build confidence!

Ideally, it will be someone you see regularly, a co-worker, family member or friend, someone with a lot of self-confidence that you would like to reflect. Watch them and watch how they behave when they are confident. How do they move, how do they speak, what do they say and when? How do they behave when faced with a problem or error? How do they interact with others and how do others react to them?

If possible, talk to them to learn more about their thinking and what motivates them.

Talking and being around people you confidence will generally help you feel more secure. Learn from others who are successful in accomplishing the tasks and goals you want to achieve; let their confidence decrease in you.

As you become more confident, offer help and advice, become a role model for someone less confident.
